Florence, 24 August (LaPresse) – Officers from the Livorno Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza and officials from the local Customs and Monopolies Agency have seized 65 kilograms of cocaine, divided into 57 blocks. Officers from the unit and officials from the Anti-Fraud Section of UADM Toscana 2 in Livorno identified a refrigerated container carrying a consignment of bananas from South America (Ecuador), which was deemed suspicious and warranted further direct inspection. Following an X-ray scan of the container, using the advanced systems available to customs, and the intervention of the Finance Police’s canine units, it was possible to detect the presence of a specially created compartment near the refrigeration unit’s housing. The container was therefore emptied; several lead plates, which had been fitted with the intention of evading the container scan, were removed, and the blocks of drugs, wrapped in thick aluminium foil, were discovered. After being sampled and analysed, the drugs will be destroyed at an incinerator, as ordered by the Livorno Public Prosecutor’s Office.
