This sums up the views of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, expressed during the presentation of the new UN report analysing how the 1.5-degree threshold for the average global temperature rise is set to be exceeded. “This summer’s scorching heat, devastating wildfires and deadly floods,” says Guterres, “are a warning of what lies ahead. We must ensure that the 1.5-degree temperature rise is as small and as short-lived as possible.” “This,” he concludes, “requires an unprecedented level of ambition.”
