New York (US), 16 Sept. (LaPresse/AP) – Russian intelligence services are reportedly planning to carry out targeted killings in the United States and in European countries that support Ukraine. This was stated by US federal authorities, who announced that they had foiled a plot to kill a well-known Russian dissident believed to be living in Washington. According to an indictment made public at the federal court in Manhattan, five people believed to be living abroad have been charged. The document states that, since 2024, a network linked to the Russian intelligence services has allegedly paid, or attempted to pay, individuals in the United States and other countries to monitor and then kill Russian dissidents. According to the indictment, those recruited by the network were also allegedly asked to carry out acts of terrorism against civilian and military infrastructure in European countries considered to be aligned with Ukraine. James C. Barnacle Jr., head of the FBI’s New York field office, stated that the agency had foiled the plans “through relentless work”, whilst members of the intelligence services and their affiliates “conspired to intimidate, threaten or kill people on US soil and around the world”.
