This was stated by Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, in her first address to the United Nations General Assembly since taking office. “I wish to state this very clearly before this General Assembly: elections will be held in Venezuela,” she declared, adding that her government had initiated a “political dialogue with sections of the opposition” to ensure a “process based on a level playing field for all”. Rodríguez stated that it will be the Venezuelan people who determine the best time to begin the electoral process and assured the United Nations that, when the time comes, the country’s institutions “will be ready to guarantee an inclusive and transparent process”. This was the first visit to the United States by a Venezuelan head of state since 2018, when the then President Nicolás Maduro travelled to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
