Milan, Oct. 5 (LaPresse) – Brazil’s presidential elections are heading to a runoff on October 25 between left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as neither candidate secured more than 50% of the valid votes required to win in the first round. The race was close, with Flávio Bolsonaro prevailing over Lula in Sunday’s first round of the election. With more than 99% of the votes counted, Bolsonaro secured around 47.03% of the vote, while Lula came in second with 45.16%. Lula narrowly defeated Bolsonaro’s father, former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, in 2022, who is now serving a 27-year prison sentence under house arrest after being convicted of plotting to overturn that election and prevent Lula from taking office.
