Rome, 18 Oct. (LaPresse) – “We can confirm that two Italian Eurofighter fighter jets took off on alert today in response to the presence of a drone in Lithuanian airspace.” So said a NATO official. “The aircraft,” it was explained, “were operating under NATO command. An investigation is underway and NATO remains in close contact with the Lithuanian authorities. NATO is ready and able to respond to any potential threat, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to safeguard our territory and protect our population.” The drone entered Lithuania from Poland before crashing in the north of the country, according to local media reports. “According to initial assessments, the object is believed to have entered Lithuanian airspace from Poland. I have already contacted the Polish Defence Minister and asked Poland to participate in the investigation, so that we can examine this incident together,” Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas told reporters.
