Rome, 20 Oct. (LaPresse) – The Spanish Supreme Court has applied the amnesty, provided for under the law passed during Pedro Sánchez’s government, to the Catalan independence leader of Esquerra Republicana (ERC), Oriol Junqueras, who was still serving a sentence for embezzlement. The move came after the Constitutional Court ruled that the amnesty law could also be applied to this offence, of which the Catalan pro-independence leaders are accused for having organised the 1 October 2017 referendum on Catalan independence using public funds. The Supreme Court’s decision also applies to former regional councillors Raul Romeva, Jordi Turull and Dolors Bassa. The politicians will now be able to stand for election again, as their disqualification from public office has been lifted. “Justice has finally been done,” Junqueras wrote on X.
