Rome, 23 Oct. (LaPresse) – “The demand for these substances stems – like other forms of addiction, from alcoholism to gambling addiction and new digital addictions – from social hardship, isolation and fear of the future, particularly amongst the younger generations.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent on the occasion of the international meeting organised by the European Coalition Against Addictions at the San Patrignano Community. “No national system, however effective, is sufficient on its own. Cooperation between countries means, first and foremost, consolidating a shared, constant and lasting commitment such as that which characterises this place,” he added. “Here, as in so many therapeutic communities, public services and voluntary organisations across Europe that work alongside schools and families, rehabilitation takes place on a daily basis, through work, training, solidarity and the patience of those who support people on this difficult journey. The Republic’s gratitude goes to all those in Italy and abroad who are committed to this invaluable work, as well as to international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and other criminal activities,” concluded the Head of State.
