Rome, 25 Oct. (LaPresse) – “It is now forty years since the Meeting of Friendship and Prayer organised by John Paul II in Assisi, the city of St Francis. Religious leaders from all over the world came together to bear witness to peace and brotherhood, to reaffirm that one must not kill, exploit or subjugate in the name of God. The event in Assisi was a prophetic one. The Community of Sant’Egidio has taken the lead in organising international meetings which, year after year, have sought to rekindle the ‘spirit of Assisi’ whilst wars, inequalities, and the desire for power and domination have increasingly weighed down upon the course of history. We are grateful for this valuable commitment. Today, as we return to Assisi in the run-up to the celebrations marking the eighth centenary of the Saint’s death, I wish to express my heartfelt hope that these days will bear fruit.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, on the occasion of the International Meeting for Peace in Assisi entitled ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’.
