Brussels, 27 Oct. (LaPresse) – Strengthening Frontex with greater operational resources, a central role in returns and new tools to identify and address crises promptly. This is the aim of the European Commission’s proposal, which seeks to give the European Border and Coast Guard Agency a more decisive role in returns and a more effective response to crises. Key new measures include expanding the permanent corps to 30,000 staff, establishing a rapid reaction force to be deployed within 24 hours, and setting up a European Return Coordination Centre. According to the Commission’s proposal, Frontex will be able to provide operational support to organise returns from one third country to another, subject to agreement with the countries concerned and in accordance with fundamental rights and international standards. To implement the new EU rules on returns, the Commission is also proposing a regulation on the digitalisation of returns, readmission and reintegration.
