Turin, 3 Nov. (LaPresse) – “The outcome of the day was a failure. I am solely responsible.” This was stated by French Home Secretary Laurent Nunez before a National Assembly committee of inquiry, just over two weeks after the large-scale demonstrations on 17 October. The Home Secretary was called upon to explain the shortcomings in the policing operation, which failed to prevent the riots and looting of shops. “The internal security forces were confronted with unprecedented violence,” he said, as reported by the French media. Nunez recalled that he had offered his resignation to Emmanuel Macron as early as 18 October and pointed the finger at “the far left”. “It is they who bear the primary and main responsibility for the violence witnessed. But I, as Minister of the Interior, am nonetheless the first to answer to you with a great sense of responsibility,” he added.
