Rome, Nov. 4 (LaPresse) – “On this day, the Italian people pay their respectful tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives for Italy, leaving us a legacy of freedom and unity that we celebrate with renewed awareness. Today, our thoughts turn with particular intensity and sorrow to our military personnel who lost their lives in recent days in Bosnia and Herzegovina.” This was stated by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in a message sent to Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on National Unity and Armed Forces Day. “A profound bond of trust and gratitude unites the Army, Navy, Air Force, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza with the national community, of which they are an integral part. With these sentiments, I extend my warmest wishes to soldiers, sailors, airmen, Carabinieri officers, Guardia di Finanza personnel, civilian Defence staff and their families,” Mattarella wrote. “In the year marking the 80th anniversary of the Italian people’s free choice of the Republic, the celebration of National Unity and Armed Forces Day takes on particular significance. The Armed Forces’ oath of allegiance to the Republic draws on the values of its Constitution, a heritage of principles preserved so that the relationship with the generations succeeding one another in the life of the country may unite the memory of the past with hope for the community’s future, and so that the atrocities experienced in the world wars may never be repeated,” he added. “Above all, we celebrate the fulfilment of the Risorgimento dream of the unity of our homeland, independent and free, and the journey that, through the Liberation struggle, secured freedom and democracy for our people and an authoritative role for Italy through the Republic’s policy of peace and international cooperation.” At the end of his message, Mattarella concluded: “Long live the Armed Forces, long live the Republic.”
