Brussels, 5 Nov. (LaPresse) – “I agree with Prime Minister Meloni that we should not speak with different voices. We must remain united in reiterating that the issues raised by Russia also require a decision at European level. If we present a united front in conveying this message, our influence will be taken seriously.” This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, whilst answering questions at a press conference in Portugal. “This is why,” she added, “the work carried out together with the foreign ministers is important: it is a matter of responding to the demands put forward by the Russian side on all the issues that may have been raised. The point is that, so far, Russia has only put forward its maximum demands. All the pressure has fallen on Ukraine – from Russia, but also from other actors at the table. To redress this imbalance in the negotiating position, we have agreed – together with the foreign ministers – on our starting point, which must form the basis for any kind of negotiation.” Kallas emphasises that “a just peace implies not only an end to the conflict, but also a guarantee that war cannot break out again”.
