Rome, July 11 (LaPresse) – Forty-two percent of the water flowing through Italy’s aqueducts is wasted, at a cost approaching 10 billion euros a year. This was reported by the Cgia Research Office. The cities with the highest losses in the water distribution network are Potenza, Chieti, L’Aquila, Latina and Cosenza. With the heat and the advance of drought, the question raised by Cgia is whether Italy can really afford to waste 42% of its drinking water. In practice, it explains, “157 litres of water are lost every day for every Italian, a waste that in 2022 generated an estimated economic impact of almost 10 billion euros a year.” The structural interventions needed to modernise the country’s water network, Cgia notes, “have largely remained on paper. These are critical issues affecting the entire country, although in many areas of Southern Italy the situation has now reached levels that are difficult to accept.”
