Rome, 23 Aug. (LaPresse) – “The mass exodus of Italians yesterday, Saturday 22, and today, Sunday 23 August, is being hit by a bill of over 406.7 million euros in additional fuel costs compared with the same period in 2025.” This was stated in a press release by Codacons, which calculated the impact of price rises at the pump on the pockets of motorists returning from their holiday destinations. At current motorway prices, a 50-litre full tank costs over 104 euros for petrol and 110 euros for diesel. The calculation, based on the same number of cars on the road as during the same period last year, puts the total additional expenditure on petrol and diesel at 406,704,000 euros over the weekend. A “massive hit” that comes right in the middle of the post-holiday exodus: estimates suggest over 24 million journeys, with particularly heavy traffic on the main return routes today. “In just two days, Italian motorists are spending over €406 million more at petrol stations than last year, assuming the same number of cars on the road,” Codacons reports. “This is a veritable tax on the post-holiday exodus, affecting millions of families just as the summer holidays are drawing to a close. The Government must take immediate action to ease the cost of fuel and prevent the return from holidays from turning into yet another financial blow for motorists.”
