Rome, 29 May (LaPresse) – Whilst health authorities’ attention is focused on Ebola, it appears that the Hantavirus outbreak – which has so far resulted in 13 cases and 3 deaths – is coming to an end. ‘Today, the risk of Hantavirus in Italy is very low. Travellers who had been in contact with symptomatic patients, as well as those who have shown some symptoms, have tested negative. We have no cases of Hantavirus in Italy.’ This was emphasised on Unomattina, on Rai 1, by Maria Rosaria Campitiello, head of the Department of Prevention, Research and Health Emergencies at the Ministry of Health. In the Hantavirus emergency linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius, ‘the Ministry has demonstrated readiness. Regardless of the political controversies, health comes first. And we have shown that we are following procedures closely with scientific rigour,’ Campitiello asserts. Meanwhile, travellers who came into contact with those infected “are coming to the end of their quarantine and active health monitoring. So I believe the risk is certainly low and we are also nearing the end” of the Hantavirus case.
