Rome, 8 July (LaPresse) – Sixteen years’ imprisonment, permanent disqualification from public office, legal incapacitation whilst serving the sentence, and an order to pay damages to the civil parties, with provisionally enforceable payments of up to 120,000 euros. This is the sentence handed down by the Court of Assizes in Latina against Antonello Lovato, found responsible for the death of Satnam Singh, the Indian farm labourer who died in June 2024 following a very serious accident at work on the defendant’s farm in Borgo Santa Maria. The Court, having recognised general mitigating circumstances, also ordered Lovato to pay the costs of the proceedings and the costs of his pre-trial detention. On the civil front, the defendant must compensate the civil parties for the moral and material damages suffered, with provisional awards of 120,000 euros to the widow, Sony Soni; 90,000 euros each to the Singum and Carli Asbil families; and 50,000 euros to Singh M. Palla. According to the prosecution, Satnam Singh was seriously injured after a homemade plastic-wrapping machine for melons severed his arm. Instead of immediately alerting the emergency services, Lovato allegedly accompanied him and left him outside the house where the worker lived. This behaviour, according to the Latina Public Prosecutor’s Office, contributed decisively to the farm labourer’s death. At the previous hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Luigia Spinelli had sought a 22-year prison sentence, arguing that Singh would have had a real chance of survival had he received prompt medical assistance.
