Milan, 16 July (LaPresse) – “We express our deep concern at the collapse that occurred this morning inside the Bolzano Courthouse, in the area undergoing renovation work. It was only the time at which the collapse occurred – 6 am – that prevented the consequences from being far more serious. Our thoughts are with the court staff and the workers on site. What happened in Bolzano this morning cannot be regarded as an isolated incident. It is yet another warning sign of the dire state of Italy’s court buildings. For years, too many courthouses have been plagued by serious structural defects that jeopardise the safety of judges, administrative staff, lawyers and members of the public. We have long been firmly denouncing this situation; for this reason, we have submitted a photographic dossier to the Government containing over 500 images documenting the state of disrepair in numerous judicial offices. That dossier can no longer be left unanswered, as has been the case so far.” So stated the Central Executive Committee of the ANM in a press release following the collapse of part of the Bolzano courthouse. “It is incomprehensible that discussions continue regarding the opening or reopening of small courts when the State is still unable to guarantee conditions of safety and dignity in existing judicial offices. The priorities must be clear: first, the buildings in which justice is administered every day must be made safe, by allocating immediate and adequate resources to judicial infrastructure. Any other decision represents a serious reversal of priorities. The safety of those who work in and visit courthouses cannot be left to chance. Any further delay risks turning a foreseeable emergency into a tragedy,” the statement concludes.
