Vatican City (Vatican), 19 Aug. (LaPresse) – The texts of the music that characterises the liturgy “should be appropriate, profound and, at the same time, easily understandable, drawn chiefly from Sacred Scripture, the liturgical books and the spiritual tradition of the Church. We must be vigilant in this regard, so that the dynamic expressed in the ancient principle ‘lex orandi lex credendi’ – that is, the law of prayer is also the law of faith – may be kept alive and continue to grow.” So said Pope Leo XIV during Wednesday’s general audience at the Vatican. Prevost, referring to the Council, then emphasised the value of “Gregorian chant” and the “pipe organ”. “A theme dear to the conciliar reform,” the Pope continued, “is that of inculturation, including in the field of sacred music. Particular emphasis is placed, in relation to the musical traditions of different cultures, on the importance of taking them seriously into account as part of people’s religious and social life.”
