Rome, 20 August (LaPresse) – The Spanish judicial authorities have ordered the extradition to Italy of Domenico Paviglianiti, believed to be a leading figure in the ‘Ndrangheta clan of the same name operating in the province of Reggio Calabria, with links to northern Italy and abroad. A European Arrest Warrant had been issued against him, stemming from an enforcement order by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Bologna for a cumulative sentence of more than 19 years’ imprisonment for offences including membership of a mafia organisation, murder and weapons offences. Paviglianiti, who had been on the run since 2022, was apprehended on 26 June by the Spanish National Police. The suspect was tracked down in Soria, a town in the Spanish hinterland some 200 kilometres from Madrid, where he was apprehended as he left a restaurant. His location was identified following the monitoring of several individuals within his circle of associates, thanks to judicial and police cooperation between Italy and Spain. Paviglianiti’s criminal career also forms part of the so-called Second ‘Ndrangheta War, fought between 1985 and 1991. During that period, according to the reconstruction of events, he already held a leading role and sided with the De Stefano clan in its conflict with the Condello group, at a time marked by numerous murders that affected the balance of power within the mafia in the province of Reggio Calabria. Over the years, Paviglianiti has been subject to multiple restrictive measures and final convictions for particularly serious offences, including membership of a mafia-type organisation, murder and international drug trafficking.
