Iran, Bonelli: ‘Relying on Russian gas again is damaging; autonomy and peace come from renewables’

Rome, 15 March (LaPresse) – “I consider the debate that has arisen over the proposal to resume buying Russian gas to be unrealistic and harmful. The war has demonstrated, for those who still had any doubts, that gas creates instability: it is the root cause of conflicts over control of gas fields, fuels speculation and accelerates the climate crisis. If we want to make Italy energy-independent and truly sovereign, we must free ourselves from our dependence on hydrocarbons and focus decisively on renewable sources: solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal. In three years, our companies are capable of installing 60 GW of renewables, a capacity that would allow us to replace around 40 billion cubic metres of gas, equivalent to almost 65% of current national demand. With renewables, energy costs less, our energy independence is strengthened, and bills for citizens and businesses are reduced. Anyone who thinks they can guarantee Italy’s energy supply by looking to Putin, Trump or Arab countries is not a patriot; they are an enemy of the climate and of peace.” So says Angelo Bonelli, MP for the Green and Left Alliance and co-spokesperson for Europa Verde.
