Milan, 30 May (LaPresse) – ‘However hard Meloni tries to hide her government’s U-turns – a government divided on everything from foreign policy to the economy – Europe has now realised that Italy cannot be trusted: which is quite a problem when it comes to negotiations.’ Enzo Amendola, a PD MP and former Minister for European Affairs, said this in an interview with La Repubblica. “If she were to adopt Forza Italia’s position, she would risk breaking with the League, which is a pro-Russian party, and vice versa. Moreover, Salvini’s hostility is pointless; it serves only to demonstrate his closeness to Putin,” he said. ‘I recall that Ukraine submitted its application to join in 2022 and negotiations began in 2024: the process is underway. And the Prime Minister’s ambiguity will cause us to lose face with our European partners,’ he emphasises. ‘I won’t hide the fact that there have been differences in the past regarding Ukraine, including on military aid: but now that the prospect of accession negotiations has opened up, we are all pulling in the same direction,’ he adds. “And in fact, Conte did not say he was against it; he merely raised the issue of the timing and methods for getting there: a process which, as the countries of the Western Balkans are well aware, involves stages. The progressive coalition is pro-European.”
