Milan, 27 June (LaPresse) – “Homotransphobia kills. Sadly, it also killed Mirko Moriconi, who was shot dead by his father along with his mother; some time ago, his father had even written on social media, ‘My father would rather be dead than gay’. Homotransphobia, sadly, kills, and I believe that in the face of this tragedy, the whole of society and the political establishment must reflect on this, because there are still those who question the point of holding Pride events.” This was stated by Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein on the sidelines of the Milan Pride 2026 parade. “This is the point,” continued the Democratic Party secretary, “to change the culture in a country where homophobia and transphobia, sadly, continue to claim victims, because ultimately, hatred and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people lead to violence – violence in many forms, whether physical or mental – and we must take this into account. And yet some people are still surprised as to why we want a law against hate, against homophobia, lesbophobia and transphobia – such as the Zan bill, which was scuppered in Parliament.”
