Rome, 18 July (LaPresse) – “Whilst Italy remains in the grip of a heatwave – with June having been the hottest month ever recorded in Western Europe and the Mediterranean Sea reaching off-the-charts temperatures, with some marine areas up to 6 degrees above the average for the last forty years – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to remain silent on the climate crisis. This silence and inaction are serious and incomprehensible. Indeed, in parliament, the right wing is seeking to pass a law allowing hunting in parks and ten protected areas.” These are the words of Angelo Bonelli, an AVS MP and co-spokesperson for Europa Verde, who continues: “Meanwhile, desertification is calling into question the possibility of continuing to farm the land, especially in the South. In Italy, 21 per cent of the territory is at risk of desertification, whilst in Sicily the figure exceeds 60 per cent. This situation is exacerbated by the severe water crisis our country is currently facing; suffice it to say that 42 per cent of drinking water is lost due to dilapidated water mains: 3.4 billion cubic metres a year, enough to meet the needs of 43 million people. A national state of emergency must be declared immediately, along with a properly funded climate adaptation plan and genuine investment in water networks, which currently continue to lose almost half of the water they carry. We are waiting for the Prime Minister to tackle Italy’s real emergencies – which are not the electoral law,” concludes Bonelli.
Caldo, Bonelli: ‘Meloni remains silent on the climate crisis; citizens are paying the price’
