Rome, 19 July (LaPresse) – “President Mattarella, the sole authority, will decide on Roggero’s pardon. A pardon is not an alternative to a retrial, nor is it a remedy for a conviction based on new, decisive evidence. It would become an unnatural fourth level of judicial review. And the Ministry cannot play a role. The pardon is the President’s prerogative from A to Z, and rightly so. The Ministry has complied with the rules: to date, there have been no initiatives regarding the Roggero case.” So said Deputy Minister of Justice Francesco Paolo Sisto in an interview with Quotidiano Nazionale, before continuing: “My personal view is that, on these matters, one cannot go beyond the necessary solidarity. There is a final judgement and it must be enforced, as it is for everyone. The issue of compensation is a separate matter. I believe the bill denying compensation for damages to those who have committed certain serious crimes is the best response the Government could have given.”
