Milan, 23 Aug. (LaPresse) – ” The night of 24 August 2016 will remain etched forever in our minds and hearts, shaken by the terrible earthquake at 3.36 am that devastated central Italy and triggered the seismic sequence which unleashed its destructive effects in the months that followed, affecting a vast area: 8,000 square kilometres, 4 regions and 138 municipalities. Today, the earthquake zone is Europe’s largest construction site, and on this site it is not just houses, public buildings, churches and factories that are being rebuilt. The lives of an entire community are also being rebuilt, a community overwhelmed by an event that has forever changed the face of villages, towns and the wider region. Ever since taking office, the Government has worked with determination and tenacity to bring about – after too many delays and false starts – a decisive acceleration in post-earthquake reconstruction.” This is written by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in the foreword entitled ‘Signs of Hope’ to the book ‘The Stones of Rebirth’, presented today at the Rimini Meeting. “The journey of reconstruction is not over. Much has been done, but just as much remains to be done. And we intend to do it. With determination and tenacity, to respond to that ‘call for a future’ directed at us by those who were born and raised in those places and wish to return to live there. Because the future is born where there is life and there is heart. For those who have stayed, for those who have returned or wish to return. Because staying and returning are not merely a personal matter; they are not acts of stagnation or nostalgia, but a choice, a vision, an act of care, a desire to build,” he adds.
