Rome, Nov. 6 (LaPresse) – “When it comes to citizens, the energy bills decree is postponed yet again; when it comes to launching an assault on the Anti-Corruption Authority, the Meloni government moves at lightning speed. The decision by Meloni and her associates to try to appoint a party political figure, League member Altieri, to the top positions at ANAC is extremely serious, especially after the Authority was previously led by distinguished independent legal experts with no party affiliations: first Raffaele Cantone, a magistrate who made his mark in the fight against the Casalesi clan and is now Prosecutor in Salerno, then Giuseppe Busia, who distinguished himself as Secretary General of the Data Protection Authority and ended his term as President of the Network for Integrity and President of the European Network for Public Ethics. This comes as no surprise to us. We know what they are allergic to. They cannot tolerate anyone questioning the Public Procurement Code, after they amended it by multiplying direct contract awards without public tenders. They cannot tolerate criticism of the failure of the Strait of Messina Bridge projects, whose groundbreaking was preceded by a corruption investigation”. This is what M5S leader Giuseppe Conte wrote on social media. “Giorgia Meloni, when pressed to respond on this point, has just shrugged her shoulders: ‘It was within our powers to do so’. That is not the case”, the former prime minister stressed. “The law requires the president to be appointed from among experts of ‘recognised independence and proven experience in combating corruption’, who must not have held elected office or positions in political parties, even during the preceding three years. But by now we know all too well what Brothers of Italy thinks about legality. They cling to the memory of Paolo Borsellino, but consistently betray his legacy when it comes to facts. They conceal Delmastro’s chats with a front man for a Camorra clan, shield Santanchè over the Covid fraud case, and turn a blind eye to the corruption scandal involving earthquake relief funds and Fabio Pistarelli, a trusted figure of Brothers of Italy in the Marche region and for years the right-hand man of President Acquaroli. Not to mention the indifference with which they deal with the scandals involving their political leaders in Sicily. But Altieri’s appointment to ANAC will not go through, because the law requires a favourable vote from two-thirds of the parliamentary committees. And we will fight it!” “We have a great deal of work ahead of us when we take over the government of the country: we will roll up our sleeves to restore legality, reinstate our ‘Spazzacorrotti’ anti-corruption law, restore the safeguards of legality, repeal the disgraceful reform targeting the Court of Auditors, and return full oversight powers to the independent regulatory authorities”, Conte concluded.
