Rome, 12 December. (LaPresse) – At 41, she left everyone behind with her overwhelming superiority. Lindsay Vonn won the first World Cup downhill race. On the St. Moritz track, the American champion gave a perfect performance, finishing ahead of Austria’s Magdalena Egger by 98 hundredths of a second and Mirjam Puchner by 1.16 seconds. Italy’s Sofia Goggia finished off the podium, 1.31 seconds behind the American. Vonn, who returned to competition last year after a six-year hiatus, was embraced by her rivals at the finish line, with Goggia congratulating her on her achievement. She and Vonn are among the favourites at the Games, less than two months before the Milan-Cortina Games. This is the American’s 83rd World Cup victory, making her the second most successful skier in the history of alpine skiing, behind only Mikaela Shiffrin, and one of the few athletes to have won at least one World Cup race in each of the discipline’s specialities.
