Paris, May 31 (LaPresse) – French police have detained over 400 people involved in violent clashes that broke out Saturday evening in Paris and other French cities after Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Champions League title. Seven officers were injured while some fans set fires and vandalized shops, Laurent Nuñez said, describing the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.” A small group even attempted to storm a police station in Paris. Nuñez stated that disturbances occurred in around 15 French cities and that nearly 400 people were detained in total, with almost 300 in Paris alone. However, he noted that the celebrations scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Champ de Mars, near the Eiffel Tower, would take place as planned. The PSG team will later be received by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. Fans began celebrating in Paris immediately after the final whistle of the match held Saturday evening in Budapest, where Paris Saint-Germain won the trophy by defeating Arsenal on penalties after a highly contested final. Supporters paraded along the avenues around the Arc de Triomphe, lighting flares and honking car horns. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Élysées, where police attempted to control the crowd. The Paris police prefecture reported that smaller groups caused disturbances in various parts of the city, vandalizing shops and setting fires. Several cars were set ablaze. Those who attempted to storm a police station in the elegant 8th arrondissement were dispersed by law enforcement. Last May, following PSG’s first title, 201 people were injured in the French capital and police made over 500 arrests across France.
