Milan, 1 June (LaPresse) – Tennis player Adolfo Daniel Vallejo has been fined half of his Roland Garros prize money for claiming that his match should not have been officiated by a woman. Vallejo lost to Moise Kouame in a gruelling five-set match last week. In an interview with a tennis magazine, he stated that matches of this nature require male umpires. Roland Garros director Amélie Mauresmo announced the $65,000 fine on Monday, describing his comments as unacceptable. Vallejo criticised umpire Ana Carvalho for failing to control the crowd, claiming that a man was needed to manage the demanding atmosphere. He also argued that the crowd’s behaviour favoured his French opponent.
