Rome, 12 June (LaPresse) – A good start for Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. In front of over 80,000 fans, Javier Aguirre’s side beat South Africa 2-0 thanks to goals from Quinones and Jimenez, the latter the star of a remarkable story following the serious head injury in 2020 that had put his career at risk. The match was dominated by the Mexicans and also saw three red cards: two for South Africa and one in stoppage time for Mexican defender Montes. In the other Group A fixture, South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1. The Czechs had taken the lead through Krejci early in the second half, but the Asians turned the result around thanks to goals from Hwang In-beom and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu. With these results, Mexico and South Korea lead the group with maximum points after the first matchday.
