Conakry (Guinea), Jan. 5 (LaPresse) – Guinea’s Supreme Court has confirmed the election victory of the military junta leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya. The December 28 vote was the first in the country since a 2021 coup ousted the elected government. Doumbouya’s victory consolidates his transition from military leader to democratically elected president. Four years ago, Doumbouya led a coup in the West African nation. The elections were held under a new constitution that lifts the ban on military leaders running for office. The amendment also extends the presidential term from five to seven years. Runner-up Yero Baldé had filed a petition accusing the electoral body of manipulating the results. Authorities say he withdrew the petition one day before the Supreme Court’s ruling.
