Iran, Merz: “Ready to contribute to the security of the Hormuz Strait with the right conditions”

Frankfurt (Germany), 16 April. (LaPresse) – The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, in view of the Paris summit on the security of the Strait of Hormuz, underlined the fundamental willingness of the German government to contribute to the future safeguarding of navigation in the strait off the Iranian coast. “I coordinated this position within the German government,” Merz said. However, he stressed that this would require an international mandate – preferably from the United Nations – a resolution from the German government and a mandate from the Bundestag. “We are still far from this goal,” added the chancellor. The meeting of European states in Paris on Friday will also address the issue of the possible involvement of US forces in a European mission following a ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran. “We will discuss it further and, if necessary, make a decision,” Merz explained. Government sources have indicated that Germany could participate with mine clearing ships of the MJ332 type or with reconnaissance ships. A naval logistics base in Djibouti, East Africa, could also be used for this purpose.
