Flotilla, activists: ‘Subjected to 40 hours of abuse and cruelty’

Rome, 1 May (LaPresse) – Activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla who disembarked in Crete “have barely survived 40 hours of deliberate cruelty on board a navy vessel”. This is according to a post on the Flotilla’s official account on X. “They were deprived of sufficient food and water and were forced to sleep on floors that were deliberately and repeatedly flooded,” it explains. Furthermore, “when the military attempted to seize two of the participants”, the activists “offered peaceful resistance”. ‘The response was pure violence: the participants were punched, kicked and dragged onto the deck with their hands tied behind their backs.’ The activists speak of ‘broken noses, cracked ribs and beatings’. Furthermore, once they arrived in Crete, ‘the Greek police held them on buses, denying them the freedom to leave’. Some of the activists have begun a hunger strike. “We will not remain indifferent. We demand their release and that the international community respond immediately,” concludes the Flotilla’s post.
