Dakar (Senegal), 18 May (LaPresse/AP) – The Congolese Health Minister has announced the opening of three treatment centres in the eastern region of Ituri, as the country grapples with an outbreak caused by a rare variant of the Ebola virus. “We know that hospitals are already under pressure due to the number of patients,” said Samuel Roger Kamba during a visit to Bunia, the capital and largest city of Ituri, “but we are preparing to have treatment centres at all three sites so that we can expand our capacity.” Health authorities say the current outbreak, first confirmed on Friday, is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare variant of Ebola for which there are no approved treatments or vaccines. Although there have been more than 20 Ebola outbreaks in Congo and Uganda, this is only the third time the Bundibugyo virus has been detected.
