Madrid (Spain), 18 May (LaPresse) – The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, has requested her acquittal should the case go to trial, arguing that the allegations against her “do not constitute a criminal offence” and that the prosecution is acting in “bad faith”. This is the argument put forward, according to RTVE, in the defence brief that the First Lady’s lawyer has sent to the Madrid court investigating her for alleged offences of influence peddling, corruption between private individuals, embezzlement of public funds and misappropriation of funds. Gomez denounces the ‘recklessness of the charges’, which she claims ‘has been evident throughout the entire proceedings’ because, in her view, ‘from the outset there has been a complete lack of sufficient evidence’. In April, investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado, presiding over Madrid’s Court No. 41, requested that the First Lady, her assistant at Moncloa, Cristina Alvarez, and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés be committed for trial.
