Rome, 19 May (LaPresse) – Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero has been accused of influence peddling and other related offences as part of an investigation into the alleged laundering of €53 million in public funds that the government had allocated to rescue the airline Plus Ultra following the pandemic. The newspaper El País – citing sources close to the investigation – reports that the National Police’s economic and fiscal crimes unit is conducting an operation, searching Zapatero’s office, the offices of his daughters’ company and two other businesses. Judge José Luis Calama has summoned the former prime minister to give evidence on 2 June. This is the first time in Spain’s democratic history that a former prime minister has been investigated for corruption.
