Rome, 1 July (LaPresse) – The total number of confirmed Ebola cases in the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has risen to 1,333. This was announced by the Ministry of Health in its latest update, dated 29 June. The death toll stands at 399, with 189 people having recovered and 609 patients currently receiving treatment. The case fatality rate is 29.7 per cent, whilst contact tracing has reached 82.7 per cent. The outbreak remains concentrated in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, where response efforts are continuing with the strengthening of clinical case management, epidemiological surveillance and public awareness campaigns. Over the past day – the report explains – 26 new cases were confirmed thanks to the intensification of active surveillance, and nine new recoveries were recorded. The health authorities have also launched free healthcare services in four priority health zones in Ituri province and urge people to seek immediate medical attention at a health centre in the event of sudden onset of fever, severe fatigue, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding.
