Ottawa (Canada), Aug. 22 (LaPresse) – Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on US products starting September 8. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this today. The move escalates the trade conflict after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on around 20 billion dollars’ worth of Canadian products and last-minute talks failed yesterday evening in Washington. The Canadian prime minister said the dollar-for-dollar retaliation will target steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, and electronics. Details on the specific products will be announced in the coming days. Speaking in Ottawa, Carney also revealed that Canada was prepared to withdraw the remaining retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles if the United States substantially reduced its own, and to encourage the provinces to resume sales of US alcohol. However, he stressed that Washington’s final demands went too far. “They asked for too much and offered too little,” Carney concluded.
