(LaPresse) – “The European Commission believes that any glorification of war criminals contradicts the most fundamental European values and has no place in the EU or in the EU candidate countries.” This was stated by a European Commission spokesperson, asked by LaPresse about the Serbian Ministry of Justice’s report on the burial with the highest state and military honors of General Ratko Mladic, the ‘executioner of Srebrenica,’ who died yesterday in The Hague. “Ratko Mladic,” the spokesman recalls, “was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity and the Srebrenica genocide. He was a war criminal. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in 2017, a sentence upheld on appeal by the Residual International Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in 2021. If Ratko Mladic is buried in Serbia, it would be up to the Serbian authorities to confirm their possible role in the funeral.”
