Milan, 28 Oct. (LaPresse) – “Likud is Israel’s largest party” and the country must “form a strong, right-wing national government”. This is what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said when he addressed supporters in Jerusalem shortly after 3 am local time on the night following the election. Netanyahu reiterated his refusal to form a government that relies on Arab parties. In his speech, Netanyahu listed Israel’s military successes over the past three years and promised that he would see the job through against Iran. In a message directed at his rivals, he went on to state that no government should be formed that relies on Arab parties. The Arab-led parties have achieved an excellent result and could become the kingmakers in the elections if it is confirmed that neither Netanyahu’s bloc nor that of his opponents will have the numbers to form a government. Reflecting the climate of uncertainty in the absence of a clear winner, the atmosphere was festive at both Eisenkot’s and Netanyahu’s campaign headquarters.
