Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Kitagawa, Robson and Yaghi

Turin, 8 October (LaPresse) – The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa of Japan, Richard Robson of the United Kingdom and Omar M. Yaghi of Jordan “for the development of metal-organic frameworks”. The winners ‘have developed a new type of molecular architecture,’ according to the award citation. ‘The structures they have created – metal-organic frameworks – contain large cavities into which molecules can flow in and out.’ Kitagama, Robson and Yaghi ‘have used them to collect water from desert air, extract pollutants from water, capture carbon dioxide and store hydrogen.’ ‘Metal-organic frameworks have enormous potential, offering unexpected opportunities for customised materials with new functions,’ said Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.
