France: agreement on budget fails, special law on the way

Rome, 19 Dec. (LaPresse) – This morning’s attempt by the Joint Committee, where seven MPs and seven senators met in an attempt to reach an agreement between the National Assembly and the Senate on the 2026 budget bill, has failed in France. According to French media reports, the meeting was brief and it quickly became clear that an agreement could not be reached. At this point, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, as previously stated, could introduce a special law to ensure the functioning of the state apparatus. Lecornu “took note” of the failure to reach an agreement in a post on social media. “I would like to thank all the parliamentarians from all groups who worked and sought, in good faith, a reasonable compromise,” he wrote. “However, I regret the unwillingness of some parliamentarians to reach an agreement. Starting on Monday, I will convene the main political leaders to consult with them on the way forward,” Lecornu concluded.
