Australia: Over 10,000 people gather at Bondi Beach in Sydney to commemorate the massacre

Melbourne (Australia), 21 Dec. (LaPresse/AP) – Over 10,000 people gathered on Sunday, under close police surveillance, at Bondi Beach in Sydney to commemorate the massacre a week ago, when two armed men fired into the crowd during the Jewish holiday of Hannukah celebrations, killing 15 people. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was booed. Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-born greengrocer who was shot after wresting a hunting rifle from one of the gunmen, sent a message of support from the hospital. All of Australia joined Sydney’s Jewish community in lighting candles and observing a minute’s silence at 6.47pm, as did television and radio networks, to mark the moment the massacre took place. Albanese announced a review of law enforcement and federal intelligence agencies following the Islamic State-inspired attack.
