Rome, Mar. 17 (LaPresse) – “Before having read all the documents and heard all the voices, it would be not only improper but even illegitimate for me to comment.” This was stated by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio on ‘Ping Pong’ on Rai Radio 1, regarding the ‘family in the woods’ case. “Inspectors are sent to clearly understand the facts and verify whether the necessary elements exist or not,” he explained. On the subject of disciplinary action, Nordio added: “I have been criticized for having exercised disciplinary action very few times, but I would even remove it from the Justice Minister, because it could seem like political interference in the autonomy and independence of the judiciary.” “If it were up to me, disciplinary action should be exercised only by the Attorney General of the Supreme Court,” he emphasized, noting that “inspection activity is intended to collect data that perhaps the Attorney General cannot have.” He therefore rejected accusations of using news cases for political purposes to campaign for the ‘yes’ vote: “I don’t think we are exploiting them. These are events that capture the imagination and sensitivity of the population and make it clear that something in the judicial system is not working.”
