Rome, 16 May (LaPresse) – US officials suspect that Iranian hackers are responsible for a series of breaches of fuel level monitoring systems at petrol stations across several US states. This is reported by the CNN website. The hackers responsible are said to have exploited automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems that were online and unprotected by passwords, managing in some cases to manipulate the readings displayed on the tanks, but not the actual fuel levels inside them. No physical or material damage appears to have been caused, but the breaches raise security concerns, as access to an ATG system could, in theory, allow a hacker to conceal a fuel leak. Sources familiar with the investigation say Iran is the main suspect in the cyberattack.
