Taipei (Taiwan), 20 May (LaPresse) – Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, has stated that, if given the opportunity, he would tell US President Donald Trump that he wishes to continue purchasing American weapons, which he described as “essential” for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. At a press conference marking the second anniversary of his term in office, Lai stated that “only strength can bring peace” and that “no country has the right to annex Taiwan”. The island’s leader accused China of being “the destroyer” of peace in the region and reiterated that “democracy and freedom should not be regarded as a provocation”. Lai added that Taiwan’s future “cannot be decided by external forces, nor can it be derailed by fear, division or short-term interests”.
