Rome, 16 June (LaPresse) – Seven preventive measures, five in prison and two under house arrest, were carried out in the early hours of today as part of an investigation by the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office into an alleged anarchist terrorist organisation. The suspects are accused of having set up a clandestine structure aimed at carrying out violent acts for the purposes of terrorism and subversion of the democratic order. Two of them are also believed to be responsible for the attack carried out on 14 February 2026 against the Rome-Florence high-speed rail line, an act of sabotage carried out using homemade explosive devices that caused extensive damage to the infrastructure. The operation was conducted by the DIGOS unit of the Rome Police Headquarters, coordinated by the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office and supported by the Central Directorate of the Prevention Police. The judge for preliminary investigations at the Court of Rome has issued five orders for pre-trial detention in prison and two orders for house arrest based on evidence gathered during a complex investigation. According to investigators, those arrested are alleged to have formed a group structured in the manner typical of anarcho-insurrectionism, with an operational base in the capital but established links with other groups in various Italian cities, including Milan, Bologna, Forlì-Cesena and Naples. The charge brought against them is that of association for the purposes of terrorism or subversion of the democratic order, as provided for in Article 270 bis of the Criminal Code. Of particular significance to the investigation is the alleged involvement of two suspects in the attack on the high-speed rail network between Rome and Florence. The attack, carried out using rudimentary explosive devices but considered by investigators to be highly potent, caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure, with repair costs estimated at around €455,000. At the same time, a similar act of sabotage is alleged to have taken place along the Rome-Naples line.
