La Guaira (Venezuela), 27 June (LaPresse/AP) – The confirmed death toll in Venezuela following the twin earthquakes that struck the country – two tremors in quick succession measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale – has risen to 1,430, according to local authorities. Meanwhile, the number of people reported missing by their families has risen to at least 68,900. Venezuelans searching for their loved ones are working with shovels, heavy machinery and ropes, and are even digging with their bare hands through the rubble of buildings that collapsed as a result of the quake. This is particularly the case in La Guaira, which is one of the hardest-hit states in Venezuela. Most of those digging are civilians who have taken charge of the search operations. Tension has soared due to the Venezuelan government’s response, which is considered inadequate.
