Trento, 29 August (LaPresse) – “The news of a gathering of European neo-Nazis in Trentino, entitled ‘Return to Camelot’, leaves one stunned and incredulous. We are witnessing the resurgence of an ideology that cannot be considered a legitimate opinion, as the partisan President Sandro Pertini once remarked when referring to Italy: ‘Fascism,’ he said, ‘is not an opinion but a crime.’ The immense tragedies of the twentieth century caused by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy are still there to prove it.” This statement was issued by Rifondazione Comunista in Trentino in relation to the large-scale neo-Nazi rally scheduled to take place in Pietramurata from 3 to 6 September, coinciding with the visit of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. “The generation that endured the atrocities of the war, the round-ups and the deportations to concentration and extermination camps in Germany, Austria, Poland is no longer with us, and ignorance of that history – compounded by the underestimation of the importance of education in shaping a civic and democratic conscience – has contributed to the return of right-wing parties to government today, which provide fertile ground where skinhead movements face no obstacles to their growth,” emphasises Rifondazione Comunista. We call upon all democratic forces to reignite anti-fascism as a cultural opposition to historical revisionism regarding the history of the twentieth century – and in particular the role of the Resistance in Italy and Europe – and as a struggle for the implementation of the constitutional principles of the rejection of war, social justice, equality and freedom from all forms of authoritarianism and repression. For this reason, we call on the Committee for Security and Public Order and the Prefect of Trento to prevent the neo-Nazi rally, which is a clear affront to the memory of all the victims of Nazi-Fascism and to the Resistance, from which our Republic was born.”
